You don’t need Cheeseandbeer to tell you who this years’ Oscar nominees are. You can’t tie your shoes without seeing a thousand different versions of the list. Blah blah blah… “The Departed” … blah blah… Helen Mirren … blah blah … “Babel” … blah … Leo. They all look like wonderful picks, and we’re already trying to hunt down those flicks that were nominated that we’ve yet to see. But there were a few that made us do a spit take, which is where we come in. (more…)

Roving film critic and eternal composer of disjointed musical games, Stuart McLeod, sends us his favorite films of 2006. Short and sweet, with one note added: “… substitute ‘An Inconvenient Truth‘ for ‘Children of Men‘. Gore’s movie is what might happen. Children of Men shows a nightmarish future happening.” So without further ado: (more…)

Mel’s new movie, “Apocalypto” confirms that he has a fetish for man-on-man violence. Apparently he had a Mayan history expert on-set. It seems apparent that he also had a torture expert advising on 101 ways to destroy human flesh (or maybe it all came from Mel’s imagination). I was still having trouble understanding german, especially at the speed spoken in normal conversation. Fortunately, the dialogue in that film was secondary to the action. While “Lola” might have been his launch pad (more…)

I’ll be checking out an “advanced screening” tonight of Tom Tykwer’s new flick, “Perfume: The Story of a Murder.” Some of you may not remember Tom from his past smashy film, “Run Lola Run” which was an onslaught of … well, running. I saw this film while I was living in Germany under their title, “Lola Rennt” and was giddy with pleasure. I can’t say that Tykwer (pronounced tick-ver) has managed to achieve that same level of energy in his other films (”The Princess and the Warrior” and “Heaven”). These two films have been more about subtle beauty than Die Kaiserin running her ass off, poor Franka.

“Perfume” has all the marking of a film I’m not going to really like just cause I absolutely LOVED the book. I’ll let you know what I thought of it.
